Ingredients list for Brown Rice Payasam

  • 1/2 cup Brown Rice soaked in water for 3-4 hours
  • 1 litre Full cream milk
  • 6-8 Saffron (kesar)
  • 10-12 Cashewnuts chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Raisins
  • 1/2 cup Dates seeded and chopped
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 10 Pistachios

Method

  1. Heat milk in a deep non stick pan. Drain and crush brown rice coarsely. Add this to the milk and cook till rice is almost done.
  2. Add saffron and mix and continue to cook. Add cashewnuts, raisins, dates and cook till everything blends well.
  3. Add a little water or milk if the mixture is too thick and cook till rice is completely done. Add a little sugar if you want the payasam sweeter.
  4. Garnish with pistachios and serve warm.
