Shalgam Aur Matar Ki Subzi Recipe Card


Turnips and green peas – shalgam and matar cooked with cumin seeds, onions, tomatoes and powdered spices finished off with a good sprinkling of Punjabi garam masala. This one is best made in winter when turnips are at their best. Have them with garma garm rotis dabbed with ghee.

Ingredients for Shalgam Aur Matar Ki Subzi Recipe

  • Turnips cut into 1 inch cubes 4 medium

  • Green Peas 3/4 cup

  • Oil 2-3 tablespoons

  • Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Green chillies broken 3-4

  • Onions finely chopped 2-3 medium

  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 4 tablespoons

  • Bay leaves 2-3

  • Tomato puree 1 cup

  • Coriander powder 1 tablespoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • Punjabi garam masala powder 1 teaspoon

  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Heat oil in a non stick handi. Add cumin seeds, green chillies and onions and sauté lightly.

Step 2

Add 3 tbsps coriander leaves and turn off heat. Drain and transfer into a mixer jar and grind to a fine paste with a little Bisleri water.

Step 3

Add bay leaves to the oil remaining in the pan and sauté for ½ minute. Add tomato purée and cook for 7-8 minutes.

Step 4

Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, ½ tsp Punjabi garam masala powder and mix well. Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes.

Step 5

Add ground masala, cook for 3-4 minutes stirring continuously. Add turnips and green peas and cook for 1-2 minutes.

Step 6

Rinse mixer jar with some Bisleri water and add to the turnips. Add Tata Salt Lite and mix well. Cover and cook till turnips are done.

Step 7

Add ½ tsp garam masala powder and 1 tbsp coriander leaves and mix.

Step 8

Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot.
