Germany: Spaghettieis

Well, after reading the word ‘spaghetti,’ you might’ve immediately got a vision of the popular pasta type. If you did, you’ve got it somewhat correct. This one’s very distinct than other icecreams you might have heard of. It was created by a teenage boy who moved from Italy to Germany and was keen to bridge the gap between these 2 cuisines, in his own way! The spaghetti is made out of vanilla icecream with a spaetzle press and topped with sweet strawberry sauce (depicting the tomato sauce) and white chocolate shavings (depicting the parmesan cheese). We’re totally swooning over this German style frozen treat! Aren’t you?

Turkey: Dondurma

Turkey has more to offer than just the Turkish coffee and the popular dessert, baklava. The word Dondurma translates to ‘freezing’ in English. A little different from other Westernice creams, this Turkish version is thicker, creamier but at the same time chewy in texture. This is because of an ingredient called ‘mastic’ which is also called as ‘Arabic gum.’ Apart from milk and sugar, the main ingredient in this ice cream is ‘salep,’ flour made from the roots of an orchid, which thickens the consistency of the ice-cream.

India: Kulfi

While we are talking about the most popular icecreams from around the world, how can we miss out on the goodol’ kulfi? This traditional desi icecream is made with milk alongwith flavourings like cardamom, saffron, etc. and sugar/honey, topped with nuts and sometimes served with falooda turning the whole ice cream eating experience quite extravagant! Making a kulfi is not an easy task as it is slow-cooked and takes almost a day to prepare. We’ve got some really interesting recipes here.
