Granite counters for your kitchen

Using granite as the material for your kitchen countertops is a great option as it looks great, but beware while choosing one as all granite are not created the same. Granite is an igneous rock found all over the world and is very hard, granular, crystalline and is a blend of Micah feldspar and quartz. The nature remains porous, though not as much as marble, but some fissures and tiny pits that have to be sealed while using for building purposes. Some granite varieties have more of these pits, so you need to keep this in mind while selecting it for your kitchen countertop.

The various colours and patterns in which granite is available in the market range from blackish, tanish or blue crystals embedded in hues and patterns like swirly, solid or flecked.

Granite is one of the most common materials used for kitchen slabs, though being expensive. Regardless of the price issues, this material is popular because it can maintain a beautiful appearance for years, alongwith being easy to maintained and easy to work with. As granite is available in an array of varieties and grades, therefore they are priced differently and you can choose the one you want for your kitchen counter top. The basic rule goes this way – that if you want something rare and striking, you have to shell out more money than if you are getting something very usual. Also, curvy edged-counter tops and thicker ones are more expensive than their thinner and simpler counterparts.

One more important thing that you need to keep in mind is that you should consider the source that you would buy your piece of granite from. Make sure that they are experts as you would not want something substandard while installing a counter top in your kitchen. Also, the quality is a major factor you should check of the granite sample – trusted sources will never give you cheap options and will also save you from those who sometimes die and oil the granite to make it look more appealing. A simple way to check the quality is test your granite piece by rubbing it with a clean cloth dipped in nail polish remover – you can avoid taking the granite if the colour comes off it. To check how much porous your granite is – put a few drops of lemon juice on it and see how long it takes to soak and whether it leaves a stain or no.

Keep the points in mind and get your granite counter top done without any hassles. Using granite for your kitchen slabs is the best thing you can do as it never gets outdated, and merges almost with any décor at any point of time.
