Cleaning the refrigerator

It is essential to keep the refrigerator clean. To do this it should be washed out and defrosted each week. In order that the refrigerator may work as efficiently and economically as possible, the ice around the evaporator should not be allowed to become thicker than a quarter of an inch.

Particular attention must be paid to keeping the insides of the cabinet clean at all times and any spillage should be wiped up as soon as possible. Soap abrasives or any cleaning materials having a scent or a strong smell should not be used. A little bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a little warm water is all that is required for cleaning the interior of the refrigerator.

To defrost, either turn the control to the DEFROST or minimum position or turn off the electricity. Remove all food and leave the door open, the frost around the freezing unit will then thaw out and drip into the dripping tray or chill drawer under the evaporator, which can then be emptied.

In order to hasten the defrosting process, the ice trays can be filled with hot water and placed inside the evaporator and a bowl of hot water placed inside the cabinet. On no account must a metal instrument be used to remove the ice from the evaporator.

Some of the large luxury type refrigerators have an automatic defrosting process, which is carried out automatically and very rapidly without it being necessary to remove food from the freezing compartment or the rest of the cabinet.
