Save money and cut down on clutter in your cleaning cupboard by buying one cleaning product to cover several tasks. Keep your most frequently used cleaning products, brushes and cloths together in one basket and take it with you as you go from room to room. If you are buying a new vacuum cleaner, choose a model with tool storage and you will never waste time searching for attachments. A tidy home always looks much cleaner than a cluttered one. It takes only few minutes to empty out wastepaper bins and ashtrays and get rid of wilting flowers. Get into the habit of putting away magazines, toys, videos and other bits and piece immediately after you use them. Use a small chest as a coffee table to provide storage for clutter when you need to clean up quickly. Put aside unwanted papers for recycling. Organize bills, school notices, newspaper cuttings and other paperwork in colourful files. Grimy windows can make a whole room seem dull. Add a little vinegar to a weak detergent solution and go over the windows with a sponge. Wipe clean, then polish with crumpled newspaper. The most efficient way to clean the room is to dust first and then sweep and wipe or vacuum. Keep a spot remover for carpets and upholstery at hand, and clean up any spills immediately. Make sure the entrance to your home is clean, with any glass or metal door fitting polished. Lay a large doormat just inside your front door. Guests notice smells that you have learned to live with, so open your doors frequently and keep pets, their bedding and their litter trays clean. Finger marks on the edge of doors and around door handles and light switches can build up unnoticed, but it takes only a minute to wipe them away. Remove pet hairs from carpets and upholstery by brushing the surface lightly with a slightly moist foam sponge. It’s quicker to wipe over the bathroom every day than to scrub off built-up grime. Wipe the bath and basin with a little detergent or liquid cleaner on a soft cloth and brush around the toilet. Better still, train the family to clean the bath after themselves. Polish the bathroom mirror with a squirt of window cleaner and a soft cloth. Clean around bathroom and kitchen taps and fittings with an old toothbrush dipped in bicarbonate of soda. Soak the dishes in soapy solution in case you do not want to wash them immediately after the meal. Scrub kitchen surfaces clean. Place a wedge of lemon in the fridge to keep it smelling fresh.
