Srilankan Dal Curry

It is a fact that Dals and Kadhis are comfort foods and they are a good source of calcium, phosphorus, vitamins B and iron. Dals, especially are a major source of dietary fibre and proteins. Kadhis are a blend of yogurt and herbs which assist in efficient digestion. Ingredients for Srilankan Dal Curry Recipe

  • Split red lentils (masoor dal) soaked and drained 1 cup

  • Turmeric powder ¼ tablespoon

  • Salt to taste

  • Onion 1

  • Green chillies 2

  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon

  • Fenugreek seeds (methi dana) ¼ teaspoon

  • Curry leaves 10-12

  • Thick coconut milk ¼ cup

  • Lemon juice 1 teaspoon

Method

Step 1

Put red lentils, 2 cups water, turmeric powder and salt in a non-stick pan and mix well. Cover and cook till the lentils are done.

Step 2

Slice onion.

Step 3

Slit green chillies without cutting through and add to the pan.

Step 4

For tempering, heat coconut oil in another non-stick pan, add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and onion and sauté for ½ minute.

Step 5

Pour the tempering over the cooked lentils and mix well. Add coconut milk and mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Add lemon juice and mix well. Cover and cook for a minute.

Step 6

Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot.
