Drain and put the dal in a deep non stick pan with three cups of water.
Bring it to a boil, cover and cook for ten to fifteen minutes or until it is just done or soft.
Take care that the dal grains do not get mashed. Heat the oil in a deep non stick pan.
Add the cumin seeds, black cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaves and cloves and sauté for a minute.
Add the coconut pieces and sauté till lightly browned and fragrant. Add green chillies, red chillies and turmeric powder and sauté for a minute.
Add the dal, salt, sugar and raisins and stir. Bring to a boil and take it off the heat.
Serve hot with puri, luchi or radha bollobhi.
