An inventor, educator and entertainer, his culinary cap holds many feathers. From being awarded ‘Best Chef of India’ Award by the government of India to owning his own food channel on television, ‘FoodFood’, he has pushed the envelope of culinary arts.
Born in Haryana on April 10, 1964, Sanjeev Kapoor’s culinary journey began 20 years later when he graduated from the Institute of Hotel Management in Delhi with a diploma in Hotel Management.
He started his career as an understudy chef at Hotel Ashok, Varanasi, where the General Manager noticed his potential and promoted him to Executive Chef. He was only 27. Sanjeev Kapoor’s professional life skyrocketed from that point. The next year, he was awarded the coveted ‘best executive chef of the country’ award.
His personal life boomed with his career. He married Alyona Kapoor in 1992 and now has two daughters, Kriti and Rachita.
In 1993, he was approached by Zee TV with an offer to do a cookery show, then called Shrimaan Bawarchi and now, Khana Khazana. He went on to become a food consultant on the show, after which it gained immense popularity.
In 2000, he published ‘Khana Khazana: Celebration of Indian Cookery’ and published many more over the years, the latest being The Live Well Diet, published in 2013.
His website, ‘’, is a guide for amateur cooks with more than 7000 recipes. It has more than half a million registered users, and was awarded “Most Popular Website” in the Website of the Year Awards in 2013.
A true foodie, Sanjeev Kapoor has spread his love for food far across Indian borders and deep into international territory. He represented India in the United Nations’ Clean Cookstoves campaign, for underprivileged people in developing countries. In 2011, he worked with Rene Redzepi the head chef and owner of the world’s number 1 restaurant, Noma in Denmark. He is also on the board of Singapore Airlines International Culinary Panel.
Sanjeev Kapoor’s body of work goes beyond four walls of kitchen. He has been working for the welfare of autistic children and has partnered with Wonderchef to empower women to start their own businesses. As Julia Child said, “People who love to eat are always the best people.”
