Indian chefs masterclass shows bookworms can be epicureans


The Cookery Corner was packed on the night India’s most famous chef made an appearance at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF).

A young boy was asked who he came to see by the colourful emcee, and into the microphone he shouted, “Sanjeev Kapoor!”

It was dinner time, and Kapoor’s fried jumbo prawns in chilli, garlic and lemon sauce had a heady aroma filling up the enclosure.

While he carefully stacked the prawns to demonstrate how to present food vertically instead of horizontally, stomachs growled.

“Don’t cook by habit,” was Kapoor’s theme for the day, as he encouraged his fans to create their own recipes. “If you normally use chilli powder, try using a fresh green chilli, and see what happens,” he said, after he finished the prawn dish.

His easy rapport with the crowd was evident as he reminded the audience that they could ask him anything on the subject of food.

Kapoor rose to fame through his cookery show, Khana Khazana, broadcast across the subcontinent for two decades, and his own 24/7 food channel.

He is sometimes referred to as the ‘Rachel Ray’ of India for his unpretentious approach to cooking.

The popularity of his show is reflected on his website, which lists over 8,500 recipes, and gets more than seven million page views each month.

Author of more than 36 popular cookbooks, his latest, The Yellow Chilli Cookbook, was awarded Best International Cookbook in 2012 at the International Book Awards.
