Chef Sanjeev Kapoor talks healthy in Dubai school

Dubai - “If the UAE President invites you for lunch, what would you serve him?,” asked an innocent Rylan Joshua Dsa, a student of class 4 to India’s celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor. The chef was in a trip to Indian High School in Dubai to talk about the importance of ‘measuring’ a healthy and balanced diet.

His answer straight and simple: “If the president of UAE invites me, he should be the one serving me, why should I cook?”The entire classroom, full of primary school students and teachers, was in splits.

Kids are no less than presidents when it comes to eating food - they often have picky eating habits. Most parents complain that their kids don’t eat enough or eat too much. But how do they know how much is healthy? Chef Sanjeev Kapoor taught them a simple hand-to-plate technique where they can measure the food with their hands.

“The session was very helpful. I come from India where there are so many poor people. So we shouldn’t be wasting food. Now that I know how much to take on my plate, I will not end up wasting food,” said Krithi Reddy, a class 4th student.

Another student of class 4, Anchita Nisha, got so thrilled to meet Sanjeev Kapoor that now she wants to become a chef when she grows up. She added, “My mother always complains that I eat very slowly and that I am very thin, I should eat more. But I can now practice the hand-to-plate technique at home to know how much to eat.”

“I loved the fact that Sanjeev Kapoor said he didn’t learn everything from books. The things that he still remembers were the ones that he learned from his teachers and parents. I think I am going to always remember what I learned today,” said Nandini Eshwara, a class 3rd student.

The art of teaching kids by getting to their level works miracles, said the junior school headmistress Amita Kapoor. She added “I think the students will remember what they learned today, especially the fact that ‘You are what you eat’”

The visit was organised as part of Dubai Food Festival to engage with the community, specifically the younger generation in a fun and educational way. With the support of The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the festival launched hand-to-plate healthy eating project throughout all schools in Dubai.
