Chef Sanjeev Kapoor on his fitness routine creating awareness about autism and more

(01/05/2016)

We all know Chef Sanjeev Kapoor as someone who knows the alpha and omega of cooking and someone who has cooking tips and tricks up his sleeve. He is one of the first Indian chefs to bring world cuisines to India. We are fond of his simple, easy to make recipes, but most of us are unaware of his philanthropic side.

He supports the Forum for Autism and has been participating in the Standard Chartered Dream Run for the past ten years to create awareness about the disease. Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the child very early in life. Autism affects over 67 million people worldwide and impacts communication, behaviour and social relationships. In this disease, the nerve cells are altered, which hampers cognitive skills, although what causes the disease is still unknown.

The Forum for Autism is a Mumbai based organisation that helps parents and caregivers of newly diagnosed children with finding doctors, therapists, schools and other facilities.

Here’s an exclusive interview with Chef Sanjeev Kapoor where he talks about how he stays so fit at his age and how he wishes to create more awareness about autism.

Why did you choose to create awareness about autism?
I was told about this health condition by one of my dear friends, and when I saw children with autism, I was very touched. The immediate thought that came was to support this cause, as we do not don’t really understand this condition. Thus, I got committed towards spreading awareness.
Running a marathon is one of the ways of creating awareness. I support Forum For Autism and whenever and wherever they are doing something for the cause, I try my best to be there. Here are a few early signs of autism and expert tips to deal with it.

What is your daily fitness and diet routine?
I’m a chef, so I keep trying things whether I cook or someone else does. I also travel a lot, and that definitely means trying new food. So, the control on eating is a little difficult. But I know for sure what to eat, how much to eat and how to balance it out. In addition to that, I understand the importance of working out to burn the calories and most importantly, the importance of good sleep.

What is your one-minute fitness mantra?
‘I’m a very focused person, so, meditation comes naturally to me. To add to it, pranayama and climbing the staircase wherever I go is my mantra!

Planning to meditate? Here’s a 10-step meditation guide for beginners.

Any message for our readers?
You must be thankful to God that you are healthy. Respect your health and make it a point to reach out to those who are not that fortunate. Your little contribution can make a big difference to their lives. This is the least that we can and should do.
