Vegetarian or non-vegetarian? Oh no, vegan for me please! The word ‘vegan’ has literally caught attention of almost every person in this world right now. Veganism is one trend which people, as well as the world wide web can’t stop discussing about. If you search #vegan on Instagram, you will find more than a million posts on this single social media platform itself. November is celebrated as the ‘International Vegan Month’ and 1st day of the month as the ‘World Vegan Day.’ Swearing off all animal-based products and following a strict plant-based diet is not as difficult as it sounds. It’s not just a more responsible way of living but is also healthier and sustainable in a lot of ways. Switching to vegan and vegetarian options by excluding foods which cause harm and cruelty towards animals is directed towards a more meticulous lifestyle.  

The vegan lifestyle might have gained popularity quite recently, but you should know that it can be traced back to 2000 years ago. Vegetarianism has been very prominent in India since ages followed by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Our ancestors have always believed it to be the healthiest way of living and there are no two thoughts about it. But today, the vegan craze has taken the digital era by storm and we should definitely explore more about this fabulous trend.

How was vegan introduced to us?

The vegan diet was discovered by a Brit named Donald Watson in London and he did it before it became a ‘cool’ trend. Those days, there was a very serious Tuberculosis outbreak in the British dairy cows and Watson took it as the perfect opportunity to explain people about the benefits of following a vegan diet. In India, Mahatma Gandhi was one of the first persons to understand the cruelty towards animals and he decided to swear off any food which caused any sort of harm towards animals. Like all other principles, bapu believed in ahimsa and he vowed in his autobiography not to consume any such foods which promoted violence towards any animal. India, being a country with immense love for dairy products would have never imagined following such a daily diet but shockingly people are avoiding all milk-based products and have turned themselves into strict vegans. All thanks to this internet-savvy generation for making people aware about the nuances of veganism.
