Dussehra, derived from the word ‘Dasha-Hara’ refers to the defeat of the ten faced Ravana. As Lord Rama’s victory over him is celebrated on the 10th lunar day of the Hindu calendar month, this festival is also known as Vijayadashami: ‘Vijay’ meaning victory and ‘Dashami’ meaning the tenth. Undeniably, it is one of the most popular festivals of India.

Some more on this festival:

  • According to folklore, it is believed that Dussehra is being celebrated since the 17th century in Mysore. The king there ordered the state to celebrate it with full vigour and splendour. Since that day, Mysore worships Goddess Chamundeshwari on this day.

  • Did you know that besides India, Dussehra is also celebrated in Nepal, Bangladesh and Malaysia? Malaysia observes an official holiday on this day.

  • The festival also marks the change in agriculture crops. Farmers begin to harvest Kharif crops and post Diwali they commence harvesting Rabi crops.

  • This festival marks the end of the summer season and commencement of winter season.
