Onam Festival

If prepping a full-fledged sadya is not on your Onam agenda this year, here are 5 vegetarian lesser known dishes from Kerala that are super delicious and a slight change from the regular Onam menu. These are all completely worth the effort, so make sure you give them a try.

Raw Banana Chips

Bananas, raw and ripe, are both an indigenous ingredient in Kerala and these chips are one of our favouritethings tomake with them. Thin slices of raw banana marinated in a curry leaf flavored marinade, coated in rice flour and shallow fried till the outside is crisp and the inside is soft and mushy.

Pidi

These Kerala style rice dumplings are so good you can easily eat a handful just like that , but eat them with the classic coconut milk curry they are simmered in or with any of the famous Malabari curries and be prepared to have a brand new addiction on hand.

Jackfruit Kerala Curry

The food for Onam is strictly meant to be vegetarian fare, but this spicy robust jackfruit curry will make sure you don’t miss the meat on your plate. It tastes great with appams and even better with noolappams or thread hoppers – another Kerala specialty.

Rasakalan

This curry from the Brahmin community of Kerala is the lesser known cousin of avial, but is no less when it comes to wowing your taste buds. Ash gourd is a brilliant carrier of the spicy-sweet yogurt base it is cooked in and a coconut oil and curry leaf tempering forms the crowning glory. Just this dish with mounds of rice is a feast in itself.

Unniappam

The only thing you might need to get your hands on to make this delicious snack is a paniyaram pan or chetti – the other ingredients are basic but pack a punch. The flavor of fresh coconut, cardamom powder, bananas and jaggery is enhanced by a hint of ginger added to the batter. Use pure ghee to fry them and you have a winner at hand!

Also don’t forget to take a look at these delicious payasam recipes to put a sweet end to the festivities.
