Peel and chop the onion. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, when they crackle remove from heat. Add chopped onion, asafoetida, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and beat with a whisk till frothy. Add val, coconut milk and cook on low heat till val is cooked. Add grated coconut and jaggery. Stir for a minute till it dissolves. Serve hot with rice or ghavne.
