Ingredients list for Sesame Dal

  • 1 teaspoon for garnishing White sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup Split Bengal gram (chana dal) soaked
  • 1 teaspoon for garnish Sesame seeds (black)
  • 2 tablespoons Split black gram skinless (dhuli urad dal) soaked
  • 1/4 cup Split pigeon pea (toor dal/arhar dal) soaked
  • 2 tablespoons Split green gram skinless (dhuli moong dal) soaked
  • 1/4 cup Split green gram with skin (chilkewali moong dal) soaked
  • to taste Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 medium Tomato
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 2 medium Onions chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Red chilli powder

Method

  1. Put chana dal, toor dal, chilkewali moong dal, dhuli moong dal, dhuli urad dal, salt, turmeric powder and 2½ cups water in a pressure cooker and cook under pressure for 3 whistles. Reduce heat and cook for 15 minutes.
  2. Cut tomato into small cubes.Heat oil in a non stick pan, add cumin seeds, white sesame seeds and black sesame seeds and sauté till they splutter. Add onions and sauté till well browned.
  3. Add tomato and sauté for a minute. Add red chilli powder and mix well and sauté till tomato becomes pulpy. Open the lid of the cooker when the pressure reduces, add the onion-tomato tempering and mix well.
  4. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot sprinkled with a little black and white sesame seeds with rice or roti or parantha.
