Quick Lit The Live Well Diet

(06/24/2013)

Think Italian food in India and you think of Ritu Dalmia. This award-winning chef and owner of Diva, Cafe Diva and Latitude 28 in Delhi, is a well-known face on television. Her latest book, dedicated solely to vegetarian food (alas!) is a colourful recipe book containing mouth-watering photographs and simple instructions. The 90 recipes are divided according to ingredient — there’s potato, greens, carrot and beetroot, tomato, eggplant, pumpkin, mushroom and dairy. Each section has little descriptions and tips. There’s a helpful section on stocks, dips and sauces and one dedicated to meal plans. Pumpkin and coconut soup, beetroot and pearl barley risotto, mushroom flan, apricot knodel, spinach with sambal, corncakes with mozzarella and avocado salsa, green mango and banana flower salad... you may want to turn vegetarian just for this.

This is a healthy guide to weight management by two experts — a doctor and a celebrity chef. It contains a 140 recipes by Sanjeev Kapoor, tips on how to maintain weight loss during special events and weddings, and a weekly diet chart. The recipes are a mix of soups, salads, snacks, sweets and desserts. The diets mentioned have recipes for the dishes recommended.

This book is a compilation of recipes from the India International Centre over the last few years. It has around 200 recipes, divided according to region — China, Middle East and North Africa, South east Asia and different states within India. Some of the recipes have added reading — stories related to the dish, food that was used to commemorate men and women, notes left behind by visitors, chef’s tips, step-by-step pictures and other helpful hints. It’s an interesting look at colonial and post-colonial India as seen through its kitchens.
